MABEL PETAL

Lyricist, Performance Artist

Mabel Petal has been writing stories and poetry since she could hold a pencil. As an introvert in a family of extroverts, she learned to entertain herself using her imagination. Born into an artistic and music-loving family,  a Steinway grand piano took up most of the living space and no one seemed to mind that there was no furniture to sit on.

After working as a reporter in Chicago and an attorney in Tucson, Mabel moved  to Ashland, Oregon in 2002. Her love of music never left her, though, and in 2008 she attended a conference for the arts. There, she met and was encouraged by jazz icon Buster Williams.

After travelling  to New York City to hear Williams play, Mabel began leaning into the idea of turning her ideas and expression into lyrics. Still, her subsequent solo attempts at creating melodies were disappointing.

Years later, Mabel and Conrad met through mutual friends at a local bakery and their friendship eventually blossomed into a musical collaboration.

In creating a new song, Mabel typically writes the lyrics first and then hands them over to Conrad to invent the accompanyting melodies and chords. They then work together on timing and interpretation, often for months, before a song is ready to be recorded.

The duo became a couple in 2016 and have been happily entertaining the Ashland Oregon community at local music cafes, coffee shops and house concerts ever since.

CONRAD JOHNSON

Composer, Guitarist, Singer

Conrad grew up near the ocean in 1950’s southern California, warmed by the love of his family and constantly surprised by the seemingly inexhaustible colorbox of sunlit, seaside pastels.

The melodies he writes for Mabel’s lyrics touch lightly on difficult feelings rather than emphasizing them.

His  musical influences include folk, jazz ballads, Bossa Nova, R & B, musical theater, ballet, art music, Leroy Shield and early 20th century film scores.
